It pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn. That loosens compacted ground so water, air and fertiliser can reach the roots.
How is this different from a spike aerator?
A spike aerator pushes holes into the soil, which can press the sides tighter. A core aerator removes the soil, so the ground actually opens up.
How deep do the tines go?
Up to about 9 cm (3.5 inches), according to the maker.
How tall is it?
About 97 cm (38 inches), so you can work standing up without much bending.
How do I use it?
Stand on the foot plate and push the tines into the lawn, then lift it out. Move along about a hand width each time.
When is the best time to aerate?
When the soil is moist but not soggy. The maker suggests watering well the day before, or aerating a day or two after good rain.
Will the tines clog?
The tines have an open slot and a sloped top, so each new plug pushes the last one out. Clean out any leftover soil with a screwdriver after use.
What do I do with the soil plugs?
Leave them on the lawn to break down, or rake them up. Many people top dress straight after aerating.
Is it good for big lawns?
It suits small home lawns best. The maker does not recommend it for large farm areas.
What is it made of?
A steel frame and tines, a solid steel foot plate and foam hand grips.
Does it need assembling?
Yes. It ships in pieces with the bolts and spanners to put it together.
How much does it weigh?
1.91 kg.
How often should I aerate?
Once or twice a year suits most home lawns, usually in spring or autumn when the grass is growing.
How do I store it?
Clean off the soil and let it dry before you put it away.
Does the price include GST?
Yes. Every price on this site is in Australian dollars and includes GST.

Why core aeration works
Foot traffic, kids and dogs pack lawn soil down hard. Water runs off, roots stay shallow and the grass thins out.
A core aerator fixes that by pulling plugs of soil right out of the ground. The holes let air, water and feed get down to the roots, and the soil around them loosens up.
How to use it
Water the lawn well the day before, or wait for a day or two after good rain.
Stand on the foot plate and push the tines in.
Pull it out and step forward about a hand width.
Work in rows across the lawn. Go over the busiest patches twice.
After you aerate
Leave the plugs to break down, or rake them up.
It is a great time to top dress, feed or overseed. Everything drops straight into the holes.
Water the lawn afterwards.
