Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gabion basket?

A gabion basket is a steel mesh cage that you fill with rock. Line them up or stack them and you get a solid stone wall without mortar or bricks.

What sizes can I choose?

There are four: the 100 x 50 x 50 cm box, 100 x 30 x 100 cm wall panel with lids, 120 x 30 x 100 cm folding wall and 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall. Pick the size from the options on this page.

What are the measurements of the 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall gabion basket?

It measures 300 x 30 x 50 cm (L x W x H). Style: zig-zag folding mesh wall.

What is the gabion basket made of?

Galvanised steel wire, 3.5 mm thick, spot welded at every crossing.

How big are the mesh holes?

The mesh is 10 x 5 cm. Use rock that is bigger than the holes so it cannot slip through.

How much weight can it hold?

The maker, vidaXL, rates the loading capacity at 1,400 kg per cubic metre of fill.

Are the rocks included?

No. The basket comes empty. Landscape suppliers sell gabion rock by the tonne or by the cubic metre.

How much rock will the 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall gabion basket take?

About 0.45 cubic metres, worked out from the outer measurements. Give that number to your rock supplier and they can tell you how much to order.

What rock works best?

Any hard, frost-proof stone that is bigger than the 10 x 5 cm mesh holes. River rock, sandstone, bluestone and recycled concrete are popular picks.

Does the 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall gabion basket come with lids?

No lid is listed by the maker for the folding wall sizes. If you need a covered top, ask us before ordering.

Is it hard to put together?

No. The maker describes assembly as easy. Spiral wire coils thread through the mesh edges to join the panels. Allow time to place and pack the rock by hand.

Can I join several baskets together?

Yes. Set them side by side to build a longer wall. Mixing sizes works too, as long as the heights line up the way you want.

Can I use it as a planter?

Yes. Leave a pocket of soil in the top or the middle and plant into it. The maker pitches the folding wall sizes as a gabion planter as well as a wall.

Can I build a retaining wall with it?

For a low garden edge, yes. For anything holding back a slope, near a boundary or above the height your council allows without approval, check with your council or an engineer first.

Will it rust?

The steel is galvanised to resist rust and weather, so it suits outdoor use all year round.

How much does the 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall gabion basket weigh?

About 13.5 kg (empty). Filled with rock it gets very heavy, so fill it where it will stay.

Does the price include GST?

Yes. Every price on this site is in Australian dollars and includes GST.

Where do you deliver?

We deliver across Australia. Enter the delivery address during checkout so the order goes to the right place.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is free on orders of $90 or more. Every gabion basket size is over $90, so standard delivery is free.

How long does delivery take?

We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier.

How can I pay?

By card or PayPal through the payment provider at checkout. The store does not collect or store full card details.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes. You have 15 days from delivery to send a standard stock item back in its original packaging for an exchange or a refund. You cover the return postage.

What if it arrives damaged?

Contact us promptly with the order number and photos of the item and packaging. If the item is faulty, damaged or not as described, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply.

Where are the full returns terms?

The Refunds and Returns page explains change-of-mind returns, return condition, return costs and your consumer guarantees.

Will I get an order confirmation?

Yes. A confirmation goes to the email address you give at checkout once the payment provider confirms the order.

Can I change the delivery address after ordering?

Contact us straight away with the order number. A change may be possible before dispatch, but not once the parcel is on its way.

Can I order several baskets or ask about a bigger job?

Yes, subject to stock. Select the quantity in the cart. For a larger landscaping job, use the wholesale page and include the sizes, quantities and delivery location.

Is stock guaranteed before checkout?

Stock can change. We accept orders subject to supply, and we will contact you if an item cannot be supplied.

Can I pick it up in person?

No. We sell online only and deliver by tracked courier.

Can I ask a question before I order?

Yes. Use the contact page and include the size and the detail you want checked. We will check the maker's information rather than guess.

Gabion basket buying guide

What a gabion basket is

A gabion is a steel mesh cage you fill with rock. Line a few up and you have a stone wall with no mortar, no bricklayer and no waiting for anything to set. The rock does the heavy work. The cage keeps it in shape.

These baskets are galvanised steel with 3.5 mm wire, spot welded at every crossing into a 10 x 5 cm grid. The maker, vidaXL, rates the loading capacity at 1,400 kg per cubic metre.

Pick your size

  • 100 x 50 x 50 cm box. A closed box with a top and bottom cover. Good for low walls, garden bed edges, steps and bench bases. Takes about 0.25 m³ of rock.
  • 100 x 30 x 100 cm wall panel with lids. One metre high and 30 cm deep, with covers top and bottom and a divider down the middle. Line a few up for a privacy wall or a feature screen. Takes about 0.3 m³.
  • 120 x 30 x 100 cm folding wall. Mesh panels that fold into a one metre high zig-zag. Fill it as a wall or plant into the top. Takes about 0.36 m³.
  • 300 x 30 x 50 cm folding wall. The long one. Three metres of zig-zag mesh, 50 cm high, for long garden edges, raised beds and boundary lines. Takes about 0.45 m³.

The rock volumes come from the outer measurements, so treat them as a guide when you order.

What to fill it with

Use hard stone that is bigger than the 10 x 5 cm mesh holes. River rock, sandstone, bluestone and recycled concrete all work. Rock is not included.

Landscape suppliers sell gabion rock by the tonne or by the cubic metre. Tell them the volume above and they will work out how much you need.

Setting it up

  1. Pick a firm, level spot. Compacted soil or a bed of crushed rock is ideal.
  2. Join the panels with the spiral wire coils. They thread through the mesh edges and hold everything square.
  3. Put your best-looking stones against the mesh on the side people will see. Then fill the middle.
  4. Fill in layers and check the basket is still square as you go.
  5. On the box and wall panel sizes, close the lid and join it the same way.

Filled baskets are very heavy, so fill them where they will stay.

Retaining walls: the honest bit

A gabion makes a great low garden edge. If your wall will hold back a slope, sit near a boundary or go above the height your council allows without approval, check with your council or an engineer before you build.

Looking after it

Not much to do. The steel is galvanised to resist rust and weather. Hose off dirt and pull any weeds that pop up between the stones.
