Weathered steel, best-known as corten steel and sometimes written with the hyphen as "Cor-Ten steel", are steel metals developed to eliminate the need for painting or resurfacing as the steel forms a stable rusty appearance if exposed to the weather overtime. "Weathering Steel" means that due to the chemical makeup of the steel, this rust looking steel (used for firpits / landscape decor etc etc) exhibit increased resistance to corrosion compared to other steels. This is because the steel forms a protective layer on its surface under the influence of the weather. The corrosion-retarding effect of the protective layer is produced by the particular distribution and concentration of alloying elements in it. The layer protecting the surface develops and regenerates continuously when subjected to the influence of the weather. In other words, the steel is allowed to rust in order to form the 'protective' coating.Gas Firepit or Wood Fire Pit?
The backyard gas fire pit. A place to gather friends and family during the chilly nights. When planning this entertainment focal piece into your landscape, many ponder the question: gas firepits or wood firepits?
When choosing an outdoor gas firepit or wood fire pit, the 2 main things to consider are convenience and feel.
In terms of convenience, a steel backyard gas fire pit win hands down. Probably the best part about a home lpg gas burning fire is that it can simply be turned on or off with the push of a button.
No wood to be chopped, gathered, and stored.
The burn of either LPG propane or natural gas means there is no mess to clean up afterwards, and you also will not have to deal with the ever-present smoke that comes with wood burning applications.
We’ve all sat near a fire pit for an evening just to wake the next morning smelling like a chimney, that’s not the case with gas.
LPG gas burning outdoor fireplaces are amazing for convenience, but do have their downfalls.
To start, they are more expensive to install.
Gas firepits features will require either a natural gas line to be run from your house by a plumber, or using a propane tank to fuel the fire.
Although chances are slim, gas lines and tanks bring the potential for a dangerous gas leak.
If using a propane tank, creative landscaping is often necessary to hide the ugly gas tank from sight.
Compared to wood burning methods, a weathered steel gas firepit fall short when it comes to heat.
Wood firepits features look and feel more traditional. You can get more heat from wood because it burns hotter than both propane and natural gas outdoor fire pits .
There is nothing quite like the crackling sounds and rustic smells of a natural cedar burning fire place.
If you want an authentic, rustic feel to your fire feature, go with wood burning.
